This is one of the 5 minute poses from my Bethnall Green life drawing class. I wasn’t happy with most of the drawing from this session.

Having said that there is something about the pencil line work on this piece that on reflection I really like and there seem to be just enough lines to capture something essentials.

Miss Kitten – fetish fiasco – 28.07.08

Originally uploaded by guthriejwatson

For several months this year I did a costume life drawing class as well as my regular Tuesday life drawing sessions. Miss Kitten did seem to have a lot of fetish wear, this sessions theme was called Fetish Fiasco which makes for some interesting textures to draw.

I thought I needed some extra challenges beyond just getting body shapes and proportions ‘literally’ right. Really got a lot out of those classes. I’m interested in the fact that despite not getting all the details I might have liked I still managed to produce this drawing which doesn’t feel lacking.

the tech guy who lives in the draw

Traditional visual artists are not known for there tech savy! Some can but many not. So when presenting with peoples laptops in the seminar there was some jokes about having a tech peron who lived in a lecture room closet.

I thought maybe the tech guy would be stored away in a draw, you can then pull him out in a timely fashion whenever he was needed!

I am happy with the foreshortening and general composition of this life drawing. I do need to explore using different materials, although I do love my Uniball pen and a friend has promised to get me some other colours.

It’s one of the only times the tried and tested pencil measuring techniques has worked for me. I marked the top and bottom most extremes and sized the rest of the body accordingly.

Typically this method has made no sense but somehow it all can together here.

So I thought well at least it’s not a phone box that we are trying to fit into!
